Hey all, i seem to have dropped of the face of the DA community right?. I feel like i have been in a rut for the last couple years and shit's been real. I have been getting back into it and i hope to share more with you in the future here. I read all your messages and they are awesome, makes me feel all warm inside, so thanks for all your kind words. I moved where it's sunny and live on an Island now, so that's good. I've been writing for a longtime now and maybe soon you'll get to see what. At any rate, love ya all. Thanks again.

Oh yeah, I am selling my Cintiq 12wx and downgrading, so if anyone is up for the 800.00 price tag. let me know. It's sad to say goodbye but it works as well as the day i bought it.

Cheers, everyone and I hope you are all well and prosperous. :)

Before i talk about this subject with my musings, i just want to throw out there that i am totally guilty.

So.... To start.. some facts... DA is a great place for artists to expand on their art with influences from the general public. Try out ides, get some feedback. Thats great.

but isn't it interesting that the most popular stuff, (Meaning the most favorited or collected) is fanart?  at least from my point of view.

Not that that is bad in itself, like i said, i totally tend to do that with some people. But sometimes it makes me...not sad per say.... but interested.

i would assume that it would be other way around. but it tends not to be. and i wish it was different.

i really dig the idea and concept of wolverine for example, so i like to see some of my favorite artists on here (shout out to one of the most original artist/creators out there :iconmooncalfe: ) do their view of them..... but i am much much more interested in what else they do, i like to see and learn a little bit about the person with their original works. What drives a good portion of comic artists out there though is to work on some characters they have loved since childhood. For example, if i was offered to do a Batman or Wolverine gig, i would do it and be very fulfilled. But I am actually happier having the chance to do my own original series through the best indie publisher i know of (ape comics). really i am. Also, getting the chance to work on a comic with my favorite artists out there would also give me much more.....satisfaction....then being allowed to work on an x-men comic, get famous and do high paying concept art for the next movie.

I dunno what it is in me that makes me think that way, but i assume its the art lover and Artist lover and Creativity lover in me.  I have actually turned down an offer to make an ubsurd amount of money working for a marketing company in L.A. because......while it interested me.....and it did. i didn't think i would be happy....please don't hate me, like most people have said that i am a dumbass for that. but along with personal reasons, i was aware that i would be working 60-80 hours a week doing things that was restricted to the work on hand, changing my style to fit the work, and learning how to do things the way that sells.
Now....please understand, nothing about that is bad...at all. and i know i was very lucky to get the standing offer. but...... it's not what drives me, its just a very small part.
I love to create. to build to write, and to try and share the stories and worlds in my head. I will probably never be famous. which is unfortunate because it would allow me more creative freedom, but really thats is not going to stop me from doing the things and persuing the things that do drive me, and always have.

I like famous characters. but i really like seeing people express their own personal ideas more. it's just that that is not what drives the industry. Which ultimatlely and directly effects the artist. Brian Froud..... I know who he is and have been able to buy his stuff and revel at his ideas because Jim Henson and Frank Oz  saw that creativity in him and knew he could bring another creative force to the table. Firefly  was canceled.  but how many Csi's have they made. Not saying CSI bad, i really wouldn't know.... and that may be a bad example.... but really it takes a lot of endurance to make a living doing your own thing. Fuck, How long was Hellboy being published before they optioned it out to make a movie? years and years and years. some people do get lucky though, and by luck- i mean that someone out their that can help you make a living actually sees potential (or a good sale) in your work. For example The Maxx, or Aeon FLux. The Maxx was only out for what 32 issues when MTV picked it up? (Seth, is that right?) and they got a great crew to make it happen, i think because they saw that thing i love....creativity and a good art. (Shout out to :iconsethkearsley: would worked on the series and has gone on to direct and such).

I forgot if i had a point at all. But i will make one up right now.....Just remember thats it's up to you to really support the artist, its not even about buying anything, it's about support in any way. and remember that their seemingly pointless or irrevelant pieces may just mean the world to them.

side note. i am a huge half hypocrite because i do lots of fanart so people will see my other stuff and i Fav a lot of fanart because i enjoy it. but still, this is a reminder to me as well.

peace,
-Tim Kelly

UPDATE:

i am opening up something new. something fun.

I am feeling quite restrained with my recent art. as strange as it might seem to you all, but i have been feeling too technical with things. I am not putting in enough emotion and taking too few of my own artistic liberties. thats gonna change

These next commission i will be taking are not for those who want me to draw a character to look exactly like their character. or draw batman or the joker or the hulk in a normal way.
Basically i am just gonna go crazy and experiment and have wild fun.
with color of course, or crazy greyscale. who knows.

these new commissions will be 100$ each, but they will be crafted with love and be experimental.

So, i hope that some of you may want to get some art. Please spread this around in your journals if you can.

Take care all!  and remember to have fun with your careers.
-Tim

Well, I got a job as a Dairy farmer up in Maine. It pays decent, not the best, but i will be moving there with my wife next month. We will have to live in a communal living area  that doesn't allow computers or cell phones. sigh.
I gave art a good 6 years to get off the ground professionally but with the pros and cons of it all, dairy farming with the commune wins out.. Thats saying something about the comic industry.
Thanks for all the love and support. Good luck to you all. and i hope to hear about your futures on the Radio.
I will be taking this site down when i have time.

UPDATE___
A good example i am looking for is the coloring style of the Xbox360 game MASS EFFECT. It has a grainy look, glow, good light sources, but can be dark when needed, .grrr, i am having trouble explaining all these contrasting looks...but if you google the screen shots i think it will make sense.
I am doing a lot of sci-fi stuff, so being able to do space is good too.
Okay, later

I need a colorist. Please spread this around to anyone you know or post in your journals. I would greatly appreciate the help.

---Before i go on, know that none of these stipulations is because of Ego or whatever. -----

Why-
I feel like i would be getting a lot more work done if i knew i had someone i could trust and work with that would be coloring my lines. While i love coloring, and it is part of my art, i tend to spend more time with it than the lines, and often get frustrated, and i think a lot doesn't get done because of that. And if it works out, the completed art will be all that much better.

What i can promise-
Publishing, and some money. Not everything will be published, but there will be publishing. I am currently working on a series that i didn't plan on having a colorist, but if it all works out....i might change that. But mainly this is for pinups and covers and things. whatever comes up. granted, the money would be coming from the publishers and such, so i am not sure on the rates. but probably don't expect all that much.

What i am looking for-
I serious, dedicated, and professional artist. Someone who would love to color my stuff, for fun and for work. a partner if you will.
Someone who i can completely trust where their coming from. Has to have a good sense of color schemes and be able to add depth and atmosphere. Basically someone who knows what they are doing and not just starting out. Not that if you are just starting out means you don't.

i am looking for someone who gets off on coloring, and gets excited about doing it. and is open to changes if need be and comments. Someone who if they think they are doing something right that i disagree with can explain it to me.
Knowing that changes with the work is not personal and is open to thoughts is a must.

Also know that i might add some elements to the finished work. little things, but i will be open about it.

What i tend to like-
I like colors like Simon Bisley's, but also Moebius. Grungy stuff, textured. i dig lots of colors, but i also like the desatured look.  Do what you do though.
---------

I know that thats all pretty specific, but i am shooting high. and straight. I apparently am picky.

---------

I have never done this before so i dunno how it will turn out. but i hope well.
------

here are links to some sample images to work off of.

I hope the low res will work, but if you need the high res. Let me know.

There are no deadlines for this, but the sooner the better.
I will also post up the links here.

And their might be some immediate work if i find someone.

Thanks everybody.
Heart-Tim

Wanted to write a little something for i just watched the movie and am on a visual high.

First off, i know that Alan moore wasn't a fan. Thats fine. Doesn't influence me.

Second off, while i liked characters and certain aspects of the COMIC, i wasn't a big fan. I do however have great respect for Alan, great writer he is. So i am impartial to the comic. (Gasp! but tim!! surely you know that the comic book fans of the world will ride upon you on their tall horses and judge you with their fingers and smirks!?) that i do, but i have never cared, i likes what i like, and hell if i'm gonna be shamed into agreeing with anyone.

So, my impression is that i had a ton of fun watching it, apparently i get off watching people in masks beat the hell out of eachother in stylized dramatic ways.  Or naked dudes in red cloaks hack apart hordes of vileness, Ala 300. Nothin to me says "holy shit, that was awesome!" than a dude in an owl costume breaking a guys arm in half..... in slow mo. That in it self makes me wonder about my person....Regardless, i very much enjoy sullen gravely voiced characters in trench coats meandering about a filthy city......it just adds to a movie in my opinion.

So, i dug it......visually.
There was some cool writing as well. But i just can't get behind those kinda story lines where they act like what the characters are realizing for the first time wasn't something we, as the audience, hadn't figured out in middle school already, and are done with. so shut up about it already! i know it sells because its easy, but good lord..... but that is most, and i mean MOST movies for me. So its nothing new. I digress.

I was giddy like a kid, high on sugar cereal, watching ninja turtles on a saturday morning....

I look forward to the hate mail!
love always and forever------Tim

What should i write about.... hmmm, i guess i could write about what's unfortunately always close to my heart.....

art...who'd a' thunk it?

This is my art page right? So should i write about art related issues? I guess i should. But, Also i could write about more personal matters.... That would put me out there more i guess, or would i sound pretentious? .... Its hard to say because most of you have never met me.  Thus making it hard to gauge what i am saying. but whatever, just give me the benefit of the doubt i guess.

So if i were to just write something, lets say, from the heart? would you even care? i dunno.

Perhaps i should just go.......

..Well, alright.

So, since this is a general art site, and that is what is very important to me, i will say some non circumstantial things about art.

Simply put, i love it.

I hope you do too. Its a great thing. What beauty and wonder it can hold. Also, what awesomeness and holy shit factor can resonate from it.
Wherever you are coming from, or wherever you you are looking, there is something to find......in art.

I, particularly love sequential art, covers...pinups and all. everything about it.  it wonderful to me.
There is just so much you can do with it, and what's fun, is that there is something for everyone. Meaning, that if you are in the mood for a more guy action thirteen year old adventure, you can have it, or if you are down, maybe, and you want something more selfish and moody, its there for ya. or if you are looking for that perspective on something you just can't find anywhere else. its yours if you look.

To me, one thing i love about comics, is the privacy. Which is harder and harder to get nowadays with the internet and all. But the stories are yours to have. and i hope that stays around. you buy a comic, and you prop yourself up in your bed, or on the couch, and you just delve into it. thats wonderful, forget critics or podcasts or reviews.............you buy it, and its yours. delve into it yourself. and get what you want from it.

man, the dreams i have had of doing comics from when i was younger are all but shattered. which is harsh.

When i see that comics success fully rely on not talent, creativity and originality... but random factors like chance, and marketing...... i see the real world and get pretty pissed. again, its harsh. but not something i was particularly unaware of per-say..... but it always sucks to see, right?

I see people decide that they will not continue their passion of art and storytelling because they can't make any money at it and its too demanding for no, NO, return, and they part from their natural intuition for art to go on and wash dishes or wait tables or plumbing or business (which in no way is in itself a bad living) because its just not worth spending their time at........i get pretty depressed.

i guess what i am rambling at, again since this is a art related site, is that as much as i or anyone can complain about the comics industry or the music industry or the film industry......we can't deny our calling. i and i hope people will bare through the shit, and keep with their personal calling.

I don't know about you all but i feel a calling. A pure and sure calling to do art and storytelling. i am not great at it, i will never be considered a master i'm sure, but i can't help it......i love it. its who i am. and i won't deny myself that very intrical part of myself.

And i hope you don't either.
Live your dream and keep trucking. because its hard as shit. but man, isn't it awesome!? and what has been good that wasn't hard?

plus, now that i think about it, whats great about loving something thats easy? you can't complain!....and that seems to be part of us doesn't it? we just can't be happy....  Ha...........

Anyway friends, please just stay in love with what you care about, and don't let the shit keep you down. remember their is always more good in the world then there is bad. and if you can't see it, please ask someone to help you out.

Take care all,
-Tim

I posted the journal because I wanted to share that i have issues, and say that most artists have issues, yet it is generally considered a Taboo to talk about it. And i want to say thats wrong. and mainly i wanted to share some personal things in the first half, but leave you with the uplifting part which was the second half.

I probably won't be hired by Dc or Marvel if i am having problems keeping a 30 page a month deadline. But you know what? oh, well. I have HAVE to be fine with that. If that is my dream, lets say, i will just go about it in a different manor. I will focus on writing and illustrating a mini-series or something along those lines. I will be doing art no matter what. So its up to me to be the best i can be, and work my ass off as much as i can, and be polite, realize some people will never understand me, and try and try to get out what i can. If people are causing you problems by being ignorant or whatever, you be nice, and patient, and understand them. If we know pain etc, its not up to us to expect others to understand that. I'm glad some people don't understand that.

I will say right now, that if i want to do a Batman mini. i will put my mind to it, and eventually it will get done. Maybe it will take a long time, maybe it won't be well accepted, but that is not the point. the point is i did it. and i did it well. And i hope that everyone will continue with their passion of art, because i think it is very very important. Its important to the artist, keeps them going, its important to the viewer because of what it can inflict. Its important, because of the simple fact, thats its amazing.
We create things. we made something that wasn't there before. i know it sounds cheesy. but think on it. We are the only beings that can do it to the degree we do. and its the minority of humans that choose to do it.

the comics industry is pretty harsh, and often doesn't make any sense. It actually seems like a terrible business for artists to be in, but its the artists (writers included) that make it. Whatever you do, don't let it stop you.

anyway. enjoy.

And just so you know, even though i have my issues, i have had them for a long time and i am pretty good at dealing with them. so no worries if you know what i mean.
Just remember there is support out there.
-Tim
And thanks to all who commented and its great (unfortunatley, lol) to see that others are dealing. help each other out when you can. its not a competition. Da makes it feel like that a lot. but remember why you do what you do. we are all in it together, right?
